Professors expect you to hand in typed papers and you may need to create power point presentations for classes. Having the correct gear for your computer is especially important if you take distance learning or online classes. At the same time, you will want certain software to keep you entertained during your down time. Here are a few types of software every college student should consider having:

  • Microsoft Office. Every version has a basic word program to type your papers on, as well as easy-to-use spreadsheets for business classes. Power point presentations are also easy to create from this software. If you are strapped for cash, there is a free version available for download called Open Office.
  • Firefox web browser. Many students prefer this type of browser over Internet Explorer, because it is quicker and has easy to multiple tabbed browsing options. Firefox is arguable safer than Internet Explorer, because the browser is not as easy to hack into. Unfortunately, students are a prime target for web hacking since they are online frequently.
  • Google Tools. Google remains the most popular web toolbar, and the company offers other valuable items for college students which include free email, Google talk, Google Earth and Google News.
  • Skype for keeping in touch with loved ones. Skype is a free downloadable service in which you use a web cam to talk to your friends and family away from college.
